Job Summary
This position is responsible for meeting key Department Strategic Plan objectives, for representing Medical Teams International to diverse constituencies, and for increasing the organization’s visibility and credibility in the region.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and update the regional strategic plan and country strategic plans, including identification of priority countries, programs, teams, GIK, fundraising strategy and partnership development.
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate regional and country strategies in coordination with regional and department teams.
- Provide leadership in the achievement of the Department Strategic Plan, assisting in its implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
- Develop thorough knowledge of region, partners and programs
- Manage all programs in Guatemala, including the start-up, implementation and growth phases
- Identify and pursue opportunities for growth in countries in the region; plan exit strategies for country programs or partnerships identified for closure.
- Identify greatest health needs in the region; design projects that will address those needs in close collaboration with Technical Services
- Develop, monitor, and assess partnership development and capacity building in the region, and specifically within Guatemala.
- Facilitate cross-country networking between partners and other NGOs.
- Oversee implementation for planned results and ensure effective and timely monitoring, evaluation and reporting across all countries in the region, with direct oversight in Guatemala.
- Provide quarterly reports on regional progress and outcomes.
- Support effective use of volunteers in Guatemala
- Manage the region's budget planning, expenditure monitoring and reporting, ensuring effective use of financial resources, and supporting department budget planning.
- Assess adequacy of staffing strategies to support quality projects and work with Human Resources to effectively recruit and develop staff.
- Participate in management planning and decision making for department and regional direction.
- Pursue funding opportunities; represent and assist in developing and managing grant-funding proposals in collaboration with Resource Development and Technical Services staff.
- Visit priority countries in the region to improve partnerships, network with donors to assess potential new partners, and represent Medical Teams International to appropriate government officials and other organizations.
- Represent and communicate the work of Medical Teams International and ensure appropriate networking and linkages with other like-minded agencies and forums in Latin America and the U.S., and with health agencies, practitioners and volunteers.

- Advocate for the region’s programs internally and externally.
- Increase and improve teamwork within the Department and the organization.
- In collaboration with your department, work towards the implementation of Medical Teams International’s current strategic plan and the accomplishment of the related strategic goals.
- Manage partner relations for effective programs and use of Medical Teams International funds, teams and other resources.
- Plan and develop a regional office team, develop and review well-defined job descriptions and annual performance goals and plans, provide direction and feedback as needed and complete annual performance appraisals, facilitate and supervise work, support staff development, and facilitating communications among the regions and with other departments.
Minimum qualifications:
- M.A. in relevant field required, MPH preferred
- Minimum 5 years progressively responsible experience in international relief and development with at least 3 years experience working in Latin America and at least 3 years experience working in health sector programming.
- Proficient in spoken and written Spanish.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills in strategic planning, achieving results, coordinating and supporting a diverse team, mentoring, and staff development.
- Demonstrated understanding of international humanitarian issues and organizations, and the social development role of Christian groups and churches.
- Demonstrated understanding of quality health programs, including assessment, designing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting
- Knowledgeable about and able to advocate for region, programs, and Agency.
- Commitment to Medical Teams International mission statement.
- Ability to prepare and manage budgets, reports, project proposals and contracts.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and in teams.
- Strong communication skills including written, oral, and group facilitation; ability to successfully communicate cross-culturally with international partners and diverse constituencies.
