Internship Description: The Asia Division in the London office of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an intern to assist with various tasks including but not limited to: updating the divisional advocacy contact database; assisting with report mailings; tracking advocacy events; and assisting with general administrative tasks. The internship duration will be at least three months from September 2008 onwards and scheduling can be flexible. This is a full-time position that could be split between two candidates should such an arrangement be preferable. Human Rights Watch will reimburse London-based interns’ travel and lunch expenses in accordance with HRW policy.
This internship is unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization; close supervision by HRW staff; interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials; and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications:
Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with excellent attention to detail and a professional telephone manner. Computer skills are required; experience using the internet as a research tool and working with Microsoft Excel and databases is essential. Applicants should have a strong interest in international human rights and a good understanding of the United Kingdom parliamentary system or campaigning. This internship will not involve human rights research, nor will it be relevant to those wishing to acquire legal experience. The internship would be suitable for candidates who wish to gain exposure to the operational side of a large international human rights organisation. Both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as non-students, are welcome to apply. Graduate students with a degree in a related area of study or those with relevant work experience are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates should have a demonstrable interest in the Asia region.
Cover letters should outline candidates’ demonstrable interest in Asia, experience working with databases, and experience with campaigning and exposure to the UK parliamentary system.
How to Apply:
Please apply immediately by sending a letter of interest, resume, names or letters of reference, and a brief, unedited writing sample (no calls or email inquiries, please) to internuk@hrw.org
