The Americas Division of HRW is seeking full-time, legal or qualified graduate level intern for fall 2008. The intern will assist staff by conducting research, responding to inquiries, and monitoring current events in Latin America. While the internship will have a strong research and writing component, it will also entail administrative and clerical tasks, as well as some translation assignments. This internship will be based either in HRW’s New York office or its Washington DC office.

Internships are generally unpaid, although work-study funds are available. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Qualifications:

This internship is open to current students or recent graduates of law school or other highly relevant graduate programs, preferably from professional schools, and to individuals with journalism experience in Latin America. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable. Applicants must have a commitment to public service, and a strong interest in international human rights and current affairs in Latin America.

Fluency or high level of proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Creole is required.

Familiarity with the region and relevant coursework are highly desirable. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required.

How to Apply:

Please apply immediately (no calls or email inquiries, please) by emailing a letter of interest specifying language skills, resume, names or letters of reference, and a brief writing sample (unedited by others and no longer than 10 pages) to americasjobs@hrw.org. Please use “Americas Graduate Internship Application – Fall”

as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed.

Country or region: United States
