Internship Description: The Communications Department of HRW is currently seeking a journalism student to intern in its Brussels office to assist staff with press-related tasks including press conferences organization, press contacts management, media monitoring and audio production.

Press Contacts Management: The intern will help conduct research to expand and maintain lists of journalists reporting on human rights issues, broadening the impact and reach of HRW’s statements and reports. Familiarity with writers at major publications is advantageous for this task.

  • Media Monitoring: The intern will assist staff in closely monitoring coverage of HRW in European media. Drawing on internet research, the intern will help collect media mentions and assemble them into comprehensive electronic press packs to be used in evaluating impact and for development outreach.
  •
  • Audio Production: The intern will assist with recording and editing in-office interviews with HRW employees and helping to promote audio content to international radio producers and stations.
  •

Other projects can be assigned as they arise and match the intern's interests and abilities, including research, translation, web support and media outreach.

This internship is unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

    Qualifications:
Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in international human rights. Excellent oral and written command of French and English is essential. Familiarity working with journalists and knowledge of other languages (especially Southern and Eastern European languages) are highly desirable. Web and digital media skills are also advantageous. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, database programs and Internet applications) are required. Interns must be available to commit to this internship placement for a period of at least four months.

    How to Apply:
Please apply immediately (no calls or email inquiries, please) by sending a letter of interest, CV, contact information for two references, and a brief, unedited writing sample (of no more than two pages) to eupress@hrw.org. Please use "Media Internship Application" as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed. It is preferred that all materials be submitted via email. If emailing is not possible, send by regular mail (please do not split a submission between email and regular post) to:
