Internship Description: The International Justice Program (IJP) is seeking a part-time or full time intern to assist staff with monitoring international law developments in targeted country situations. Additionally, the intern will help staff carry out research and draft papers on issues of international justice. The intern will also assist with some administrative tasks, including filing, drafting correspondence, translating, and helping researchers prepare for missions.
Internships are generally unpaid, although work-study funds
are available. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as
Human Rights Watch (HRW) internships often offer direct exposure to the
workings of an international human rights organization, close
supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other US and
international organizations and foreign and domestic government
officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special
events relating to human rights. Students should check with their
individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications:
This internship is open to law
students, law graduates, and graduate students with expertise in
international criminal law. Applicants should be well-organized,
self-motivated, and reliable, with a strong interest in international
human rights and international criminal law. Strong writing skills are
essential. Relevant coursework is highly desirable. Fluency in oral and
written English is required, and knowledge of foreign languages is a
plus, especially French, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and/or Arabic.
Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are
required. This internship can be part-time or full-time depending on
the availability of the intern; however, the intern must be available
at least two days per week.
How to Apply:
Please apply immediately by
emailing a letter of interest, resume, names or letters of reference,
and a brief, unedited writing sample all in English (no calls or email
inquiries, please) to IJProgram@hrw.org. Please use "IJP Internship Application – Fall 2008" as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed.
