Internship Description: The International Justice Program (IJP) is seeking a part or full-time intern to assist the Washington Advocate with monitoring and compiling information on US law and policies pertaining to key international justice developments. Additionally, the intern will help the Washington Advocate carry out substantive and advocacy research on issues of international justice. The intern will also assist with some administrative tasks including filing, drafting and sending correspondence, and maintaining databases.
Internships are generally unpaid, although work-study funds
are available. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as
Human Rights Watch (HRW) internships often offer direct exposure to the
workings of an international human rights organization, close
supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other US and
international organizations and foreign and domestic government
officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and
Congressional hearings relating to human rights. Students should check
with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications:
This internship is only open
to law students, law graduates, and graduate students with demonstrated
working knowledge of international criminal law and of US law and
government. No undergraduate applications will be accepted. Applicants
must be very well-organized, self-motivated, and must demonstrate a
commitment to international human rights law and advocacy. Strong
writing skills, attention to detail, reliability, and timely follow
through on assigned tasks are essential. Relevant coursework is
required; relevant practical experience is highly desirable. Applicants
must be fully fluent in written and oral English. Knowledge of foreign
languages is a plus, especially French, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian,
and/or Arabic. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet
applications) and familiarity with online congressional databases such
as THOMAS are required. Interns must be available for a minimum of 12
hours, 3 days a week in the Washington office and are expected to start
in early to mid September 2008.
How to Apply:
Please apply immediately by
sending a letter of interest, resume, names or letters of reference,
and a brief, unedited writing sample pertaining to international
justice all in English to kheiltg@hrw.org
(no calls or email inquiries, please). Please use "IJP Internship
