The Central and Eastern European magazine Plotski is looking for contributions to the next online issue in October 2008 on: **** Food****

Plotki, a non academic magazine informed by rumours, stories of ordinary life and personal experiences, is looking for contribution for its issue on food.

We would like to encourage a reflection on food in modern society, on how we live food and how modernization has affected our alimentary habits, by comparing the way food is lived in 'Western' and 'Eastern' Europe.

Possible topics that might inspire you to send us rumours/articles/ photos/series/ poems/stories/

recipes could be:

Why do we tend to minimize the amount of time spent preparing and eating food? Is it time so important now that people are unable to take half hour for a lunch? That they prefer to spoil their health?

Is time really the point? In many Eastern Europe capitals one can find cafes and small restaurants that advertise 'fast and tasty lunch' but still offer home cooking to customers

Why people started buying pre-cooked frozen food in supermarkets? Even at dinner time there is no time to cook?

Are we really loosing the habit to prepare food at home? Why the habit to break bread is disappearing along with the one of preparing cheese at home, to bake a cake and the more we move to the West the more people seem rely on supermarkets for everything?

Food is also a way to construct social alliances, to consolidate relationships. Friendships around the table are extremely important and eating together is a way to consolidate relationships. How do
people relate to this habit nowadays in East and West?

To reflect on food and contemporary societies we encourage contributions from any perspective including (but not limited to):

• Baking bread, preparing cheese or other home made food

• Social significance of food

• Life stories (also expressed in visual form) related to food

• Experiences, shocks, surprises, friendship related to food and food
consumption

Contribution can have the form of a photo reportage, article (max 3000 words, please do not format the text), interview, graphic expression or any other form authors can think of. It is our intention not to put limits to creativity thus we would consider any contribution that deals with our topic.

Late contributions may be considered if there is still space in the issue. We encourage potential contributors who want to discuss an idea to informally contact the editors in charge of this issue at: food@plotki.net

Deadline: 2008/08/15
